A successful year for the Bemidji gymnastics team came to a close Saturday as the Lumberjacks finished third in the eight-team section tournament hosted by Fergus Falls.
As expected, Perham took the team title with 144.7 points. Detroit Lakes was second with 142.4 and Bemidji third with 132.425.
Completing the top four was Little Falls with 129.625.
Individually, Katie Jensen was averaging 9.0 on the vault this winter and Saturday she bettered that figure by scoring 9.20 and finished fifth overall. The top four in each event at the section meet qualify for the state meet and Jensen missed a trip to state in the event by only 0.05.
Alyshia Moe was seventh (9.0), Brooke Beck was eighth (8.0) and Amy Carey 10th (8.65).
"Having four of the top 10 finishers on the vault is a first for our program," said BHS coach Don Papreck.
As a team the Jacks were third on the discipline with 35.65. Detroit Lakes won the vault with 35.925 and Perham was second with 35.775.
"To be only a couple tenths of a point behind the leaders was a phenomenal performance for us," Papreck said. "The kids really stepped up."
Bemidji also was third on the beam (32.15) and floor exercise (34.075) and placed fourth on the bars (30.55).
Jensen's 10th with a score of 8.3 paced the Lumberjacks on the bars while Sara Erickson's seventh on the beam (8.8) and Carey's eighth on the floor (8.775) also were Bemidji's best efforts.
In the all around, Jensen was seventh with 34.10 and Carey ninth with 32.725.
"We saw some different judges Saturday and some people thought the scoring was tough. For us to score 132.425 at the section meet isn't bad," Papreck said. "We heard many compliments about how our kids performed.
"We had a good day," the coach added.
