Beltrami 4-H competes at national shooting invitational

Thirty-five Minnesota 4-H youth and 11 adults represented Minnesota at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational in Grand Island, Neb., June 24-29. Youth were selected to represent Minnesota through an application process following their participation in the 2014 Minnesota 4-H Shooting Sports & Wildlife Invitational. The 35 youth represented 16 counties from Minnesota. 4-H members may become involved in the 4-H shooting sports and wildlife program in air rifle and air pistol, archery, .22 rifle, muzzleloading, shotgun and wildlife. Beltrami 4-H was represented on the national team in air rifle by Melissa Perkins, Brett Carlson, Caitlin Klejeski. Their team finished fourth overall, they competed in three-position, standing and silhouette. Klejeski finished 10th overall in the national air rifle competition with an individual overall percentage of 2.5946. Perkins finished in 12th with a percentage of 2.568 and Carlson finished 22nd with a percentage of 2.4322.

Beltrami's Sara Erickson was a member of the air pistol team coached by Rose Erickson. The Minnesota National Air Pistol team finished seventh.

Joining Erickson on the Air Pistol team was Cody Maves of Itasca County, Shawn Zolner, of Redwood County and Jace Hoemberg of Cass County. Erickson finished with a personal average of 2.1269.

Mike Porter from Beltrami County coached the .22 Pistol (small bore) team made up of youth from Redwood County. Porter's team just missed the top five with an overall team percentage of 6.635743472, placing them sixth.

Beltrami 4-H was represented in trap shotgun by Anna Fogarty. The Minnesota 4-H Trap Team finished in 18th in a field of 24. The team included Fogarty, Cody Voight, Blue Earth, Rachel Engel, Chisago, Taylor Fruetel, Meeker, and was coached by John Fridstrom, Kanabec.

The Minnesota Recurve Archery Team also had a Beltrami 4-H member, Jack Dockendorf. Dockendorf posted a final score of 170, placing him 22nd overall. Team Minnesota finished in 10th with a team of three. Minnesota placed fifth in the sweepstakes. Team members included, Dockendorf, Alec Barnick, Kanabec, Brian Swedzinski, Redwood, coach Tom Popsun of Anoka and coach Laura Kuhl of Stearns.
