Beavers top Crookston for volleyball victory

The Bemidji State University volleyball team upped its record to 12-14 and improved to 6-12 in the NSIC Saturday when it swept Crookston 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 in Bemidji.

In the opener BSU used a 7-0 run behind Lindsey Weyer's serving to take a 10-3 advantage. The visitors drew within 16-12 but the Beavers closed the set with a 9-5 spurt.

The second game followed a similar pattern as Bemidji State took the early lead and held off Crookston's only challenge. The Eagles worked their way within 14-10 but the Beavers finished with an 11-5 surge to complete the victory.

The finale saw BSU take charge early and hold on for the victory. Crookston used a 7-0 run to climb within 23-22 but the Beavers ended the match with Weyer's kill and a Crookston miscue.

Nicole Olson paced Bemidji State's attack with 13 kills while Nicole Solum had eight and Kimberly Hacker six.

Jessi-Beth McCannell dished 20 set assists and Kelly Landsverk finished with 15.

Brie Grosskreutz had 21 digs and Olson contributed two solo blocks and three block assists.

Buerkle 35th at NSIC cross country meet

Kristi Buerkle placed 35th at the NSIC cross country meet Saturday at Wayne State.

Buerkle finished in 24:23.81 to lead the Beavers who trailed the 10-team field with 267 points.

Augustana won the team championship with 39 points while U-Mary was second with 42 and UMD third with 48.

Trailing the leaders were St. Cloud State (145), Mankato (147), Winona State (151), Northern State (214), Moorhead (224), Wayne (250) and BSU.

Kirsten Maras was Bemidji State's second finisher (25:36.91). Also running for the Beavers were Ali Hougen (25:44.81), Tina Larson (26:51.46), Ciara Robinson (27:26.36), Pearl Walker (28:45.46) and MacKenzie Haupert (31:06.21).

Men's basketball team wins exhibition game

An early second-half surge by the Bemidji State University men's basketball team guided the Beavers to a 87-72 exhibition victory over Wisconsin-Superior Saturday at the BSU Gymnasium.

Jake Lindstrom led the Beavers with 23 points. Bryce Tesdahl added 19 and Patrick Cassidy 17.
