Beavers soccer knocked out of postseason
The Bemidji State soccer team lost to Minnesota State University, Mankato 1-0 in the opening round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament at Mankato.
The No. 2 seed Mavericks scored the only goal of the game in the 33rd minute when Lauren Somers scored in front of the net following a corner kick.
Goalie Abby Kjonaas had 14 saves in the loss for the No. 7 seed Beavers. Mankato outshot BSU 20-5 in the game.
Senior Kirsten Erickson had both of Bemidji State's shots on goal.
The loss marked the 11th one-goal match the Beavers played in this season, which includes four 1-0 losses.
The Beavers are now 3-7-2 in NSIC Tournament games under head coach Jim Stone. BSU has reached the NSIC tournament in eight of the 10 seasons under Stone.
The match marked the end of the collegiate playing careers of nine BSU players. The senior class of Kjonaas, Erickson, Bri Scanlan, Kari McAllen, Kathryn Bjorge, Brianna Duff, Analey Skog, Bethany Fluto and Kelly Pointon have accumulated a record of 45-25-7 since stepping on campus as freshmen in the fall of 2008.
Bemidji State closed 2011 season with an overall record of 8-8-3. The Beavers finished in a three-way tie for sixth in the final NSIC standings with a 6-4-2 mark in league play.
