BEAVERS ROUNDUP: Pulkinen on Fred Mitchell Award Watch List
BEMIDJI -- Bemidji State senior kicker Zach Pulkinen was added to the 2013 Fred Mitchell Award Watch List, recognizing collegiate placekickers for excellence on the football field and in the community.
The "Watch List" includes placekickers from more than 750 eligible colleges. Pulkinen was one of 34 collegiate place kickers on the list and one of just 12 from NCAA Division II.
The Minot, N.D., native went 30-for-35 on point after attempts and 5-for-10 in field goal attempts to total 45 points in 2012, which led the Beavers and finished 10th in the NSIC. Pulkinen posted a 5-for-7 mark in field goal attempts 39-yards or less and established his career-high with a 39-yard field goal against Wayne State. He also recorded career-highs in extra point makes and attempts with a 7-for-7 performance in the season finale against Minot State.
On BSU's single season charts he ranks tied for 10th in point after attempts made (30), tied for 11th in field goals made (5) and 12th in kicking scoring (45 points).
Resch named head hockey coach at Alexandria
ALEXANDRIA -- Former Bemidji State hockey player Ian Resch was named the new boys' head hockey coach at Alexandria High School earlier this month.
Resch was a Division III All-American and team captain during the 1988 season and a part of Bemidji State's Division III national championship team in 1986.
Resch has worked as a coach and program director for the Alexandria Youth Hockey Program for more than 20 years. He has been an assistant in the Alexandria High School program and spent this past year as an assistant coach for the Alexandria Blizzard in the NA3HL. Resch also has some high school head-coaching experience after guiding the Morris program for three years.
Resch inherits a program that finished 11-14-1 last season and 94-66-8 in the last six years, including a state tournament appearance in 2011.
Former BSU assistant Courpal hired by Predators
BEMIDJI — Former Bemidji State volunteer assistant Jeremy Courpal is joining the Nashville Predators as the team’s video coordinator.
The 2012 RPI graduate was a walk-on with the Engineers’ hockey team, playing as the third-string goaltender for two seasons.
Courpal, a native of Mt-St-Hilaire, Quebec, served as a volunteer assistant coach with special video responsibilities at BSU.
