BEAVERS ROUNDUP: BSU golfers win invitational, women's hockey takes opener
BEMDJI — The Bemidji State golf team turned in four of the top five scores en route to a 38-stroke BSU Invitational victory Friday at the Bemidji Town and Country Club.
The defending event champion Beavers’ 18-hole team total of 340 (+52) gave the team its first victory of the 2013-14 season. Led by Individual medalist Katie Sheetz, Minnesota Crookston took second place with 378 (+90), while Minnesota State Moorhead rounded out the field with a 380 (+96).
Olivia Knutson and Monica Wold led Bemidji State, carding matching 12-over-par 84s to tie for second place individually. Mary Elmquist and Rachel Wold were two stokes back tied for fourth place with 86 (+14).
Bemidji State wraps up its fall season Oct. 5-6 when it travels to Brainerd and The Classic at Madden’s to complete in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Fall Championship.
WINONA — The BSU volleyball team dropped its fourth straight match Friday against Winona State, falling in three straight sets, 25-14, 25-21, 25-23.
Courtney Volkmann had her fourth double-double of the season with 24 assists and 10 digs, while Rachel Craig had eight kills and had an attacking percentage of .667 on 12 attempts.
Jessica Yostled the team with nine kills and also had eight digs. Kayla DeJong tied for the team lead with 10 digs.
The Beavers 4-8 (0-4 NSIC) return to action today in Fayette, Iowa, to take on Upper Iowa (6-6, 2-2 NSIC) at 4 p.m.
Hockey wins opener
ST. PETERS, Mo. — The BSU women’s hockey team won its season opener Friday with a 3-2 victory over Lindenwood.
Kaitlyn Tougas scored the game-winner with under two minutes to go and Tess Dusik had two assists.
Freshman Brittni Mowat made 18 saves in her collegiate debut.
