Beavers comes back in second half to tie Concordia
ST. PAUL– The Bemidji State soccer team came from behind but was unable to get a victory in St. Paul. Saturday as the team settled for a 2-2 tie in a NSIC match up with Concordia-St. Paul.
Abigail Nyquistand Tiffany VanHaaftenscored in the second half to lead the Beavers into overtime, but neither team scored in the extra period.
Concordia (1-3-1, 0-2-1 NSIC) was the first to strike at 28:55, whenBrittany Kapalascored a header off a cross past Bemidji State goaltenderSonja Barr.
The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead into halftime and made it 2-0 just 31 seconds into the half whenJess Bianchi scored a rebound in front of the net.
It didn’t take long for the Beavers (3-1-1, 1-0-1) to respond.
At the 46:45 mark, defenderAbigail Nyquist, a freshman from Golden Valley,blasted a shot from outside the box and buried it past Concordia goaltenderKayla Kuczaboski. The goal was unassisted and the first of Nyquist’s collegiate career.
BSU tied the game in the waning minutes of the game.
Concordia fouled sophomore midfielder Mary O’Brienin the box. The Beavers were awarded a penalty kick and junior captain Tiffany VanHaaften nailed it into the right corner of the net for her team-leading third goal of the season.
Bemidji State was outshot in the game 19-15 but had 11 shots on goal compared to seven by Concordia-St. Paul.
Barr posted five saves and allowed two goals in the tie. She moves to 1-0-1 on the season.
Bemidji State continues its road trip today in Mankato, where they’ll battle Minnesota State a 1 p.m.
