Beavers: Claudia Bellew signs with BSU tennis program
BEMIDJI -- Recently graduated Bemidji High School tennis player Claudia Bellew signed a letter of intent Tuesday to play for BSU.
As a senior, Bellew played primarily in singles but at the collegiate level she will probably add doubles to her schedule.
"At college you play both singles and doubles in a meet," Bellew said. "I was primarily a singles player in high school but I have played doubles and I actually love playing doubles."
Mark Fodness was Bellew's high school coach and he also is in charge of the BSU program. Having the same coach in high school and in college was one of the factors that led Bellew to BSU.
"I like the team and I like the coach," Bellew said. "Coach Fodness knows what I need to work on and what I have to do to make me a better tennis player. It will be nice playing for him again."
Bellew visited schools other than BSU but she said that staying in her home town was the right thing to do.
"Bemidji State is the best fit for me and this is where I want to go to school," she said. "I wanted to play tennis and I can do that here. And BSU also has a good nursing program and that is what I want to go into.
"I'm excited to come to Bemidji," Bellew continued. "Originally, I wasn't thinking about BSU but I didn't like the other schools I visited and the other schools' tennis programs as much as I like Bemidji State's."
