Beaver women's rally falls just short in Mankato tournament
The Bemidji State women's basketball team fell to No. 19 California University (Pa.) on Friday in the first game of the Maverick Classic in Mankato, Minn.
The Beavers made a late run at the Vulcans, getting within two points with 29 seconds left. But their efforts came up just short. BSU fell to 1-1 on the season. It was the season opener for California, a team that was an NCAA Division II tournament participant last year.
BSU was led by freshmen Melissa Borstner and Ellie Wessling, who both hit double figures for the second game in their two-game careers at Bemidji State.
Wessling tallied a double-double on the night with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Borstner had 18 points on the game, making 3 of 5 from beyond the arc and 7 of 9 free throws.
Junior Samantha Baldwin added eight points. The Beavers shot 42.2 percent for the game. BSU had 28 turnovers in Friday's contest.
Bemidji State will continue play at the Maverick Classic on today when they face Grand View at 3 p.m. at the Taylor Center.
