Beaver men's hockey team moves to No. 6 in polls
Bemidji State's Matt Read and Dan Bakala have been selected as College Hockey America Players of the Week, and the Beavers moved into the No. 6 spot in both national polls after sweeping Niagara last weekend.
Read, a junior forward from Ilderton, Ont., netted two goals and an assist against the Purple Eagles. He scored the game-winner in the series opener, gaining his 100th career point. In the second game, he assisted on Ian Lowe's game-winning goal and added his second tally of the weekend midway through the second period.
Read has now been named CHA offensive player of the week three times this season.
Bakala, a sophomore goaltender from Calgary, Alberta, turned away 57 Niagara shots, while allowing only three goals. He finished the weekend with a 1.50 goals against average and a .950 save percentage.
It's the fourth time this season that Bakala has been named defensive player of the week.
The Beavers (21-7-2 overall; 13-3-0 CHA) are back in action Friday and Saturday at No. 19-ranked Nebraska-Omaha. The Mavericks have won four of their last five games, and their 4-2 road win over Miami of Ohio 4-2 Saturday knocked the RedHawks down a notch to No. 2 in this week's polls.
Last week Bemidji State was ranked No. 9 in the U.S. College Hockey Online poll and No. 7 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. The Beavers moved to No. 6 in both this week.
In this week's Pairwise Ranking, Bemidji is tied with St. Cloud State for fourth place. The PairWise Ranking is a system which attempts to mimic the method used by the NCAA Selection Committee to determine participants for the NCAA Division I tournament.
Denver is No. 1 and Miami No. 2 in all polls, including the Pairwise.
