Mark Helgeson used to have conversations with his son, Seth, about one day growing up and playing college hockey at Bemidji State.

He was one of the few wearing Gopher maroon and gold at the BSU alumni gathering Saturday night at Stub and He rbs Bar in Minneapolis prior to the Bemidji State-Minnesota hockey game.

Seth Helgeson is a freshman defenseman for Minnesota.

"When (Seth) was younger he had dreams about playing for the Beavers, but he grew up and blossomed into such a good player -- I never dreamed he could end up playing for the University of Minnesota," said Helgeson, who currently lives in Faribault. "I'll be cheering on both my boy and the boys from Bemidji tonight.

Dave Ramsey graduated from BSU with Helgeson in 1978. Ramsey and his wife, Kim, made the drive from Owatonna to take in Saturday night's game.

"He's got that Gopher jacket on, but I can see under there he's got a little green," Ramsey said while pulling Helgeson's green and white collared shirt. "When we were in college, we never missed a hockey game."

There were also fans from Bemidji who made a vacation weekend out of the Bemidji State-Minnesota series.

Terri and Tom Forseth are BSU season ticket holders and are no stranger to traveling to watch the team. They followed the Beavers all the way to the Frozen Four last April in Washington, D.C.

The Forseths were talking hockey with Dan and Jackie Brouse. Dan and Jackie were sporting BSU jerseys: a green Matt Read replica for Dan and and a white Tyler Scofield replica for Jackie.

The Brouses also followed Bemidji State to the Frozen Four last season.

"And they're going to do it again," Jackie said with a big smile. "We're going to Detroit."

Dan and Jackie are 1982 Bemidji State graduates and make their home in Bemidji.

Dan said his daughter, Jackie, was not much of a hockey fan until Bemidji State went on the Frozen Four run last year.

"She really didn't like all the violence in hockey, but then she came to the CHA Championship game last year at The Glas," Dan said. "Now she's hooked. I think she's a little resentful she couldn't come down with us this weekend, but she'll be coming with us to Duluth when the Beavers play there later this season."

The Brouses are also planning to take a trip to Nebraska-Omaha when the Beavers play the Mavericks later this season.

"I follow college hockey a lot and I think BSU has a great chance of making the national tournament again and I wouldn't be surprised if they make it back to the Frozen Four," Dan said. "We're just sold on the program because we love the character of the team and we love the community spirit they bring."
