Baseball: VFW wins one at Perham

The Bemidji VFW opened its 23-game schedule Monday, defying the elements to divide a twin bill at Perham.

Both games ended 5-4 with Bemidji taking the opener.

The Vets make their home debut June 16, entertaining defending champion Fergus Falls at 3 at Sagedahl for two games.

Bemidji took a 3-1 lead into the fifth of the opener, only to see Perham rally for three to go ahead 4-3.

But Bemidji scored once in the sixth to tie and once in the seventh to win.

Ryan Stevens worked the first five, fanning eight and walking three. Lefty Kris Berndt pitched two shutout innings to get the win with one strikeout and no walks.

Bemidji scored twice in the first on singles by Kevin Murphy and Collin Leif, a wild pitch and a two-run single by Booster Russ.

Perham got one back in third which Bemidji matched in the fifth on Jake Urban's single and Zac Solheim's double.

The Vets tied the game in the sixth when Leif reached on an error, got to third on a second misplay and wild pitch and scored on Matt Schneider's ground out.

The winning run crossed in the seventh when Solheim was hit by a pitch, Murphy walked, both advanced on a wild pitch and Solheim scored on Russ' single.

Perham's run in the third came on a walk, balk and wild pitch,. The three in the fifth resulted from two singles, an error and wild pitch.

Bemidji out hit the host team 7-5.

It was a reverse outcome in the nightcap when Perham took a 4-0 lead after two and Bemidji never caught up.

The first four were all unearned, the result of several Bemidji errors.

Bemidji got one in the third when Cole Bardwell walked, stole second, took third on a fly and scored on a wild pitch.

Two more scored in the fifth when Bardwell reached on an error, stole second and third as Mitch Hendricks walked and stole second. Both scored on Murphy's double.

Perham got what proved to be the winning run in the fifth on two singles around a walk.

Bemidji matched this run in the sixth when Trey Johnson was hit by a pitch, took second on Bardwell's single, was sacrificed to third and scores on Leif's sacrifice fly.

But the tying run was stranded and Bemidji was blanked in the seventh.

It had only two hits in the game and committed six errors.

Schneider limited Perham to four hits in five frames, walking one and fanning eight. Solheim worked the sixth, fanning the side..
