Baseball: VFW advances, stays alive with win over Proctor
The Bemidji VFW remained alive at the state tournament Friday, scoring a 1-0 decision over Proctor in a losers bracket game.
It advanced Bemidji to a late evening game against White Bear Lake or Mankato which played the late afternoon game at Putz Field.
An overnight rain set back the time schedule more than one hour Friday.
White Bear Lake beat the St. Cloud Blue and Mankato stopped St. Anthony in their Thursday games.
Ryan Stevens out dueled Alex Oachs in the Bemidji win.
Stevens fanned nine and walked only one while his mates backed him with one error defense.
The winning run scored in the second when Booster Russ walked and Collin Leif was hit by a pitch. Mason Bellew moved them up with a sacrifice and Matt Schneider scored Russ with a sacrifice fly.
Stevens gave up his only two hits in the second but worked out of that jam.
He then retired 10 straight batters until walking a man in the fifth.
But he set down the next five before Proctor gained a life on the lone Bemidji error with one gone in the seventh.
But Stevens got the next two to preserve the win. It lifted his record to 4-1.
Kevin Murphy (4-1) got the late night start with Russ and Ernie Heifort the probable starters today. Bemidji would have to win back to back games at 4 and 7 to reach Sunday's title game.
Mitch Hendricks and Bellew each had two hits in the seven-hit Bemidji attack.
