Email

BISMARCK, N.D. – The Bemidji State baseball team couldn’t make itself at home against the University of Mary Saturday.

The Beavers dropped both games of a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference doubleheader to the Marauders 10-7 and 9-4 in a pair of contests that was originally scheduled to be played in Bemidji. On Saturday the Beavers (11-3, 2-6 NSIC) were technically the “home” team but didn’t’ take advantage.

Game One

In game one the Beavers took control early, and scattered seven runs over the game’s first five innings.

BSU led 7-4 in the fifth inning but the Marauders (12-7-1, 3-1 NSIC) broke it open in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs on four hits. They were able to chase BSU starter Phil Bray, who took the loss for BSU in the game.

The Beavers couldn’t do anything against U-Mary closer Chris Jolley in the seventh inning and the Marauders escaped with the win.

Bray took the loss for BSU, going 5.1 innings. The Marauders scored all 10 of their runs off Bray, on 10 hits, although Bray did strike out seven. Ryan Van Someren pitched 1.2 innings of relief for the Beavers.

Offensively, BSU scored seven runs on 16 hits.

Chad Hanson pounded out BSU’s first four-hit game of the season, going 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Zach Braun was 3-for-4 with an RBI and Lewis Baumann finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk.

Travis Farinas got the win in relief for U-Mary, giving up just two hits after coming on to replace starter Shane Trattles in the fifth inning.

Trattles gave up all seven BSU runs on 13 hits and struck out just one.

Game Two

In the second game U-Mary kept hitting.

The Marauders plated the first nine runs of the game, scoring at least one run in the first four innings and knocking out BSU starter Ryan Anderson early.

Anderson gave up eight runs on 11 hits and struck out just one hitter; he exited the game midway through the fourth inning.

Van Someren replaced him and gave up one run on four hits in a full inning of work.

After that, though, the Beavers started to hit it themselves, scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Jaryd Marks scored two of those runs with a pair of homers and Matt Ellinghuysen went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI.

However, U-Mary’s big lead proved too big to overcome.

The Marauders hit BSU pitching for 19 hits.

The Beavers managed just 11 hits of the Marauders. Starter Jeff Skadeland went eight innings for the win.

The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader at noon today to complete the four-game league series.
