The Nashwauk Colts made their debut into the Arrowhead League Wednesday night, handing the defending champion Bemidji Mudcats a 4-3 upset on the Colts field.
Three Colts hurlers held Bemidji to six hits. Starter J.J. Wright working into the seventh to get the win. Jamie Fillman and Dan Mell finished up.
Bemidji took a 2-0 lead in the second but the Colts scored three in the fourth to go ahead and added what proved to be the winning run in the fifth. Bemidji got this one back in the eighth but came no closer.
Tonight the Cats host the Bemidji Blue Ox at 7 at BSU in the first of their three game series.
Bemidji took the early lead when Jeff Schaper and Paul Fenner singled.
Walks to Matt Stasch and Clark forced in one run. The second scored on a force out.
Nashwauk combined singles by Joe Badavinac and Wright, an error, walk and Reed Johnson's single for its three in the fourth, leaving runners at second and third when the final out was recorded.
Dan Kessler doubled in the fourth run in the fifth.
Wright left after a leadoff walk in the seventh. Fillman came on to shut down the Cats in that frame but yielded a run in the eighth on Dan Bauer's single, a walk and error.
Mell gave up a one out walk in the ninth but fanned the final two batters.
The six Bemidji hits came off as many different bats. Wright had three and Badavinac two of the eight Colts hits.
The loss dropped the Mudcats to 3-2.
Saturday's scheduled doubleheader against the St. Paul Mudhens has been cancelled with no makeup date planned.
After tonight's game against the Blue Ox, the Mudcats will play at St. Francis next Friday night.
