Baseball: Fargo takes two from VFW
The Bemidji VFW continued to have its problems against Fargo opponents Tuesday , dropping a twin bill at Fargo 5-2 and 11-1.
It was a different team than the Fargo Bombers who handed the Vets a 13-2 setback at the Grand Forks Invitational last weekend.
The two losses dropped the Vets to 4-5 overall.
They hosted Fergus Falls yesterday in a district twin bill and entertain Perham at 4 today at BSU in a makeup double bill.
Bemidji and Perham split their season opening double header at Perham.
Fargo broke a 2-2 tie in third inning to take the opener.
The winners scored twice in the first. But Bemidji got one back in the second on a hit batter and three walks and should have scored more had not a runner been picked off first.
It tied the score in the third on two walks, an error and Collin Leif's ground out.
But despite having base runners in three of the next four frames, the Vets were not to score again.
A walk, double and single sent home two Fargo runs in the third. Another scored in the fourth on two singles around a stolen base.
Chase Vogt worked into the fifth to take the loss. Booster Russ finished. They allowed 10 hits fanning three and walking five. Joe Hallock worked the first five to get the win. The two Fargo hurlers fanned three but walked 10.
Bemidji had only two hits.
Bemidji was never in contention in the nightcap, scoring in the third on hits by Mitch Hendricks and Kevin Murphy around a stolen base.
Matt Schneider had the only other hit, a second inning single.
Fargo opened with four in the first off Jake Urban, added one in the second and five in the third. closing out the game with a fifth inning tally. The had 12 hits off Urban and Kris Berndt who fanned two and walked three.
Eight Bemidji errors made six of the 11 runs unearned.
Two Fargo pitchers had six strikeouts and three walks with relieved Dustin Mains getting the win.
