The Bemidji VFW turned in its best day of the young season Tuesday, sweeping a twin bill at Detroit Lakes 10-0 and 9-4.
It lifted Bemidji to 4-2 in district play. They head to the Grand Forks Invitational this weekend facing the Winnipeg Wolves Friday and Edina Saturday morning in pool play. There will be four three-team pools.
Bracket play will begin Saturday afternoon and conclude Sunday.
Jake Urban went the shortened route in the five-inning opener, scattering three hits while fanning four and walking one. The Lakers advanced only one runner as far as third base.
Bemidji scored twice in the third on two-out doubles by Cole Bardwell and Kevin Murphy and Collin Leif's single.
It ended the game with an eight-run fifth. Mitch Hendricks opened with a single but was still at second two outs later.
Leif scored him with a single and an error prolonged the fame and allowed seven more runs to score.
After a walk, singles by Booster Russ and Trey Johnson, Ryan Stevens' double and singles by Hendricks and Bardwell completed the carnage.
Hendricks, Bardwell, Leif and Russ all had two hits.
Big frame again
Bemidji also used a big fifth inning to take the nightcap scoring seven times to break a 2-2 tie. A time limit ended the game after the fifth.
Stevens went the route on a three hitter, fanning three but walking four.
Two hits around a pair of Bemidji errors gave the Lakers two gift runs in the first. Three more boots led to two more in the fifth. All four runs were unearned.
Baker held Bemidji in check through three innings.
But in the fourth, Bemidji tied the score when Chase Vogt walked, took third on Urban's double and both scored on a single by Russ.
Hendricks again opened the big barrage in the fifth with a single.
One out later Murphy singled him home. After a walk Mason Bellew singled home two, more and two walks filled the bases.
