BASEBALL: Bemidji State's run ends in NSIC title game with loss to MSU Mankato
ST. CLOUD — Bemidji State’s Cinderella run at a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference title ended Saturday, as the Beavers lost to Minnesota State Mankato 3-1 at Faber Field in St. Cloud.
BSU ends its season with a 25-22 overall record to tie for the second most wins in program history.
The Beavers, who lost to the Mavericks 2-1 Friday night in a semifinal game, had to beat St. Cloud State Saturday morning for a right to rematch the Mavericks.
And like they did earlier in the tournament, the Beavers brought their bats to play the top-seeded Huskies. They beat St. Cloud State 12-2, eliminating the Huskies.
Ryan Anderson went solid innings and allowed just two runs on eight hits against St. Cloud. Meanwhile, the Beavers racked up 12 runs on 14 hits to chase St. Cloud State starter Nick Maiers after three innings.
Lewis Baumann and Jaryd Marks each homered for BSU; Baumann went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Marks was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.
In the second game, senior lefty Phil Bray took the mound for the Beavers against Minnesota State (35-8) and did everything he could to get the Beavers a victory.
Bray went 7 2/3 innings and gave up three runs on six hits, striking out five and walking none.
The Mavs, however, took an early lead on the Beavers.
Parker Sullivan hit a leadoff single for MSU and came around to score on a Nolan Johnson single, giving the Mavericks an early 1-0 lead.
The Beavers got a run back in the fourth inning, when junior Zach Braun drew a lead-off walk from MSU starter Nick Sutherland. He went to third on a single by senior outfielder Trevor Purvis that landed right on the left field line.
Senior Logan Kalis grounded into a double play to short, but with no outs it plated Braun to tie the game 1-1.
After that, neither team could solve the other starter until the eighth.
Lucas Skjefte’s one-out double to right field scored two runs and put the Mavericks up 3-1.
BSU junior outfielder Chad Hanson singled in the eighth off MSU reliever Chris Williams but the Beavers couldn’t get him home.
In the ninth inning, MSU closer Mahlon Zimmerman retired the Beavers in order to secure the victory.
