Baseball: Bemidji set to host annual Des Sagedahl tournament
BEMIDJI -- Each spring the Bemidji baseball team hosts the Des Sagedahl Wooden Bat Invitational and this year's edition will be held today and Saturday.
Joining the Lumberjacks will be Grand Forks Red River, Duluth East and Roseau.
Red River's participation will be limited to one game, however, as the team has to return to Grand Forks on Saturday to play a conference game that had to be rescheduled because of a previous weather postponement.
The tournament opener will be at 4 p.m. today when Roseau will tangle with Red River. At 6:30 p.m. Bemidji will take on Duluth East and today's schedule will conclude at 9 p.m. when the Lumberjacks face Roseau.
Because of Red River's return to Grand Forks, Saturday's schedule includes only two games. At 10 a.m. Duluth East and Roseau will square off and Bemidji will lock horns with Duluth East at 12:30 p.m.
The Jacks will bring a 10-2 record into the tournament and stingy pitching has been a major reason for the success.
Ryan Hirt leads the staff with a 4-0 record and a 0.88 earned run average. The senior lefty has allowed only 12 hits in 24 innings and has struck out 35 and walked only 10.
Fellow senior lefty Collin Rutledge is 3-1 in 33 innings of work. He owns a 1.27 ERA, has fanned 35 and has walked 14. Seth Anderson is 2-2 and has a 1.98 ERA in 17.2 innings.
Matt Morgan has pitched nine innings and is yet to have a decision while Parker Lucas has worked two scoreless innings and is 1-0.
The offense has been led by James Hendricks who has a .419 batting average with 18 hits in 43 at-bats and Dan Johnsons who has 14 hits in 34 official plate appearances and a .412 batting average. Erik Fitzgerald is hitting at a .378 clip while Tom Revering is at .371 and Collin Rutledge at .333.
Hendricks has five doubles while Johnson, Rutledge and Revering each have four. Revering also has 10 RBIs and Hendricks has nine.
As a team the Lumberjacks are hitting at a .309 pace.
