BASEBALL: Bemidji Legion swept in both games of opening doubleheader
ALEXANDRIA — In the Bemidji American Legion Post 14 baseball team’s opening doubleheader, just about everything that could go wrong did.
Bemidji committed a boatload of errors and allowed Alexandria to score 19 runs in the two games combined, and Alexandria swept the doubleheader with a 13-3, 5-inning victory in game one and a 6-1 win in game two.
“It was a tough night at the ballfield for us,” Bemidji head coach Nate Blumhagen. “When you get 10-runned in your first game it’s rough.”
All three runs Bemidji scored came in the third inning and were the result of Alexandria errors.
Meanwhile, Alexandria scored at least one run in every inning, including a six-run fifth that ended the game in walk-off fashion.
Collin Rutledge took the loss for Bemidji in game one while Erik Fitzgerald also pitched 1 1/3 inning of relief.
Fitzgerald, Nick Hovila and Thomas Revering each singled for Bemidji, which was held to three hits.
In the second game, neither team’s offense came alive but four of Alexandria’s six runs were the direct result of Bemidji errors.
Connor McNallan took the tough-luck loss for Bemidji, going the distance in six innings and giving up just four hits.
Meanwhile, the Bemidji offense was held to just one unearned run and four hits. Each team committed four errors in the game.
Fitzgerald, McNallan, Rutledge and Parker Lucas all singled for Bemidji.
The Bemidji Legion returns to the field today for a 4 p.m. nine-inning single game against Nisswa.
The Legion will return to Bemidji for its home opener Saturday, a doubleheader against Thief River Falls.
