Baseball: Bemidji Legion to play six in three days
Legion faces six games in three days
The Bemidji American Legion faces three busy evenings this week, facing six games from Monday through Wednesday.
It opens Monday when the Legion hosts Nisswa in a 5 p.m. twin bill.
Thief River is here Tuesday for a non-district pair and the team goes to Park Rapids Wednesday for its third straight double bill.
It will test Mike Fogelson's mound staff to the fullest.
Freshman Cody Rutledge (1-1) and soph Tyler Follis (0-2) will get the calls tomorrow.
Juniors Chad Head (0-2) and Josh Kane (1-1) face Thief River Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Senior Simon Anderson (1-1) and soph Jeremiah Graves (0-3) will face Park Rapids.
It will be a return meeting for both sub-district rivals.
Bemidji bowed at Nisswa 3-2 and 5-3 in a pair of well pitched games last week. It beat Park Rapids 11-8 and 10-5 at home earlier with Kane and Rutledge getting the wins.
Little Falls currently holds the sub-district lead at 9-1 with Nisswa 6-1. Bemidji is 3-7, Brainerd 2-5 and Park Rapids 1-7. Nisswa holds a 5-1 lead in the fifth inning of a suspended game with Brainerd.
Bemidji showed an improved attack in its last twin bill at Brainerd, banging out nine hits in each game.
But defensive lapses hurt badly in the 9-4 nightcap loss which followed Anderson's 5-4 win on a four hitter. Nate Smolke hit two home runs good for six runs in that game.
Fogelson will use his full roster in each twin bill, carrying only 14 players including Collin Leif and Booster Russ who double with the VFW.
The Wednesday games will complete the week with the team idle until hosting Perham and Brainerd July 6-7.
