The second loss sent the team home a day early with an 0-4 record. Overall it is now 2-8.

Lack of hitting continued to plague the team, After getting only eight hits in Friday's two games, it managed just seven Saturday, all singles.

Chutes win

The Chutes, the St. Cloud Cathedral state high school tournament en try, took control of its game early, scoring four times in the second and riding the strong hurling of Nick Maiers the rest of the way.

Maiers allowed only four hits, all of them singles, while fanning eight and walking four.

The Chutes went ahead to stay in the second when a walk, error and Waylon Benboom's single filled the bases.

A hit batter forced in one run. Wil Spaniol singled in two more and the fourth scored on a sacrifice fly.

Bemidji got one back in its at bat when Matt Hietala singled, stole second and scored on a one bagger by Billy Statton.

But the Legion managed only two more singles the rest of the game.

St. Cloud added two in the fourth when Greg Pfannenstein singled, Benboom walked, the pair were sacrificed up a base and scored on Spaniol's single.

It became 7-1 in the fifth on a walk, Maiers' single, a double steal and wild pitch.

The final run crossed in the seventh when Kevin Wenner doubled, took third on a ground out and scored on Adam Sperl's sacrifice fly.

Wenner and Spaniol had two hits for the Chutes.

Chad Head worked into the seventh to take the loss, his second. Booster Russ finished the final frame.

The Legion plays at Nisswa and Brainerd Tuesday and Thursday in sub-district twin bills. The next home game is with Nisswa June 29 with Thief River here for a makeup double bill the following day .

Elks shutout

In the bronze bracket game, Bemidji had three scattered singles to spoil a fine pitching effort from Tyler Follis.

Follis recovered from a bad first inning to hurl five shutout frames in which he allowed just two hits

But Bemidji could find no way to handle the deliveries of Shieck who fanned only one and walked one but induced 10 pop outs among his 21 outs.

The Elks won the game before Follis recorded an out.

Edwards and Jaiemko opened the game with doubles. Johnson singled and stole second and Cira singled in both runners.

That was all the Elks would need as Bemidji never posed a serious threat.

Follis had two strikeouts and one walk in dropping his second decision of the year.

Bemidji played their four games without Simon Anderson who was playing with the North All Stars in the Lions All Star Series.

He worked three innings in relief Friday to get the win and was manning an outfield post Saturday. He will be back for Tuesday's games at Nisswa.
