BASEBALL: Bemidji earns No. 2 seed in Section 8AAA playoffs
BEMIDJI — Following the final two games of the regular season in which his team split a doubleheader with Brainerd Thursday, Bemidji head baseball coach Mike Fogelson figured Brainerd would likely be the No. 1 seed when the Section 8-3A tournament was seeded Friday afternoon. He was mostly just hoping his Lumberjacks would be No. 2.
Fogelson ended up being right on both counts.
The Warriors indeed earned the No. 1 seed in the section playoffs based on the QRF rankings while the Lumberjacks were seeded No. 2 for the tournament, which begins Monday.
Bemidji (14-4) will host either Monticello or Big Lake Monday afternoon at the BSU baseball diamond. Seventh-seeded Monticello (12-8) and No. 10 Big Lake (6-12) will play an elimination game to determine who takes on the Lumberjacks; from there the tournament goes to a double-elimination format.
The Lumberjacks split with the Warriors Thursday, winning the nightcap 4-2 after losing the opener 12-2, That likely vaulted them into the No. 2 seed for good.
Brainerd (17-3) earned the No. 1 seed and will take on either No. 8 seed St. Michael-Albertville (11-9) or No. 9 Sartell-St. Stephen (10-10) Monday.
Alexandria — which beat Bemidji once during the regular season but lost five games — is the No. 3 seed at 15-5; the Cardinals will play either No. 6 St. Cloud Tech (12-7) or No. 11 Sauk Rapids Rice (9-10).
St. Cloud Apollo (12-7) earned the final home game Monday as the No. 4 seed, the Eagles will take on No. 5 Moorhead (10-9) or No. 12 Becker (5-15).
The games will begin Monday at 3 p.m. at the BSU baseball diamond.
