The home team won Wednesday's opener 9-3 as a trio of VFW hurlers allowed 10 hits and walked nine batters.

"I was very impressed with Devin," said VFW coach Brad Johnson. "He threw the ball very well."

Bemidji trailed 2-0 heading into the sixth inning of the nightcap but Logan Crosby started a rally by drawing a walk. Mitch Buckanaga also walked and the runners moved up on a passed ball.

Cody Labernick plated Crosby with a sacrifice fly and Drew Peterson's double scored Billy Baumgartner who was pinch running for Buckanaga.

The 2-2 stalemate lasted until the top of the eighth and starting the winning rally was Buckanaga who doubled.

Labernick promptly singled him home.

Barrett allowed a single and a two-out walk in the home half of the eighth but he preserved the win by coaxing a ground ball for the final out.

"In the second game we played some guys who normally don't start and they all did the job," Johnson said. "They took advantage of their opportunity."

Wednesday's opener was all Grand Rapids as the home team forged a 6-1 lead after four innings and Bemidji never threatened.

The Vets managed five hits, three of them by Connor McNallan who also drove in all three Bemidji runs.

In the second stanza McNallan plated Nick Hovila with a single and doubles by Baumgartner and McNallan plated a run in the fifth. A walk, hit batter and McNallan's single combined for the final run in the seventh.

In other recent action Bemidji took a pair from Fergus Falls at Fergus Falls, winning the first game 9-1 and the rematch 10-4.

The Vets, 10-4, will be at Detroit Lakes today for games at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday finds Bemidji visiting Fargo for another doubleheader.
