Balanced Beaver women defeat Grand Valley at Mankato tournament
MANKATO, Minn. - The Bemidji State women's basketball team used a balanced scoring effort to take down Grand View 72-68 Saturday to finish the 2010 Maverick Classic with a 1-1 overall record.
BSU (2-1) got 13 points from sophomore Jessie Althoff, 11 from junior Samantha Baldwin, nine from senior Colleen McKay and eight from junior Sydney Epema.
Freshman Ellie Wessling, who led BSU in scoring in her first two collegiate games, was held to five points but led the team with 13 rebounds.
The Vikings opened the second half on an 8-0 run to cut the Beavers' lead to one, but BSU answered with a 7-0 run of its own.
BSU used scoring from several players in the first half in order to get out to the early lead.
Wessling ended her first week in a BSU uniform averaging 14 points and nine rebounds in three games. She had double-digit rebounds in both of her Maverick Classic games after recording a double-double against No. 19 California University (Pa.) on Friday.
Bemidji State will return to the court on Dec. 3 when it opens conference play at home against Minnesota State Moorhead at 6 p.m. at the BSU Gymnasium.
