Bail set at $2 million in Olivia child murder case, two people arrested in courtroom
OLIVIA -- Unconditional bail was set at $2 million this afternoon for Sergio Turrubiates Jr., 20, of Olivia, who faces a second-degree murder charge for killing a 19-month-old Olivia girl last week.
Conditional bail was set at $1 million by District Judge Dwayne Knutsen in Renville County District Court.
The child, Tiana Moore, died Friday after being airlifted to Children's Hospital in St. Paul. Her injuries were determined to be "significant" after she was taken by ambulance around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday to Renville County Hospital.
Turrubiates was arrested after the Olivia Police Department received a 911 call that a child was unresponsive. He is being held in the Renville County Jail.
Family members have set up a fund on behalf of Moore to help pay for a funeral and headstone. It has been set up at Hometown Bank in Olivia. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Tiana's parents are Tina Kirscher and Mekiel Moore.
About 20 people attended the hearing, which was delayed after two people, Jamie Hayes, 26, and James Mathew Kirscher, 22, were arrested for disorderly conduct for allegedly attempting to assault Turrubiates as he entered the courtroom. Both were tackled and taken into custody by the eight law enforcement officers in the courtroom.
