BEMIDJI – A 26-year-old Bagley man has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from allegations that he assaulted a Bemidji man with a shovel.

William Everett Anthony Isham pleaded not guilty Nov. 14 to felony second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, causing substantial bodily harm. He entered the plea before Beltrami County District Judge Paul Benshoof. His next court date was set for Dec. 26.

According to the criminal complaint:

Isham is accused of assaulting a male with a shovel, striking him seven to 10 times with a steel spade.

The assault allegedly occurred on July 11, 2011.

The victim suffered two lacerations to his head, requiring about 11 staples.

The victim told police he had been drinking at Cadillac’s Bar in Cass Lake where he met Isham, who had identified himself as William Goodwin. The victim invited Isham over his residence in Bemidji, where they continued drinking.

The two began arm-wrestling and the victim defeated Isham, who got mad and then began striking the victim in the head with the shovel, according to the complaint. The victim called out for help from a woman, who came out and stopped the assault.
