BEMIDJI - For the second time in three years Alyshia Moe and her horse Payday captured the Minnesota High School Rodeo championship in barrel racing. And for the third consecutive summer, Moe and Payday will be representing Minnesota at the National High School Rodeo Association competition.

Last weekend Moe, who will be a senior at Bemidji High School in the fall, dominated the girls barrel racing event at the state meet in Hugo.

Based on points accumulated during the regular-season rodeos, Moe entered the state as the highest-rated cowgirl in the field. She lived up to that billing during the competition as well, winning the first round with a clean run and a time of 15.771. Moe duplicated that placement in the second qualifying heat, taking the top spot in 16.149.

Those performances gave Moe and Payday the top seed in the 10-girl finals and, once again, Moe set the pace with a perfect run and a time of 15.936.

The national rodeo will be July 15-21 in Rock Springs, Wyo., and Moe will be trying to match or better her third-place national finish of 2010.

"The national rodeo will include the top four finishers from every state plus Australia," said Alyshia's mother Diane. "There will be two preliminary rounds and then the final for those who qualify.

"The keys to qualifying for the final are to run two clean races and to run fast," she added. "Alyshia's pretty confident that she will be able to do well."

Anyone wishing to give Alyshia a hand in paying for the trip to Wyoming will have the opportunity July 6 when she hosts a fundraising car wash at Overbeek Electronics.
