Authorities find owner of snowmobile that fell through Lake Superior ice
The owner of a snowmobile that went through the ice on Lake Superior near Ashland last week has been located.
An Ashland Fire Department Ice Angel was sent to a spot 700 yards northwest of Bretting Manufacturing at 2:53 p.m. Friday by a witness who saw a partially submerged snowmobile. Rescuers found the snowmobile submerged in 4-6 feet of water with an "Otter" sled on the surface, but didn't find any signs of the operator.
Ashland County Sheriff Michael Brennan said Tuesday that the owner of record had been found but said he had sold the snowmobile three months earlier. The new owner was found and was uninjured.
Brennan said the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources cited the new owner for improper registration. The snowmobile was recovered, he said.
