Augustana spoils home openers
The Bemidji State University softball team opened its home season 7-1 and 2-1 losses to Augustana Saturday.
The first game saw Augustana roll offensively as the Vikings drove in five runs in the fifth inning. Augie would score a total of seven runs on 14 hits. The Vikings turned two double plays in the game, while the Beavers had one.
Hayley Williams paced BSU's offense with a pair of hits.
In the second game the Vikings managed only four hits but the Beavers collected only two.
After Augie took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning the Beavers responded in the bottom of the sixth with a run to tie the game. Megan Bergeson reached on an error and Kayla Minarich went in to pinch run.
Minarich reached second after a sacrifice bunt by Nicole Dupay. Williams then reached on a fielder's choice but an errant throw by the Vikings allowed Minarich to score.
The Vikings scored the game-winner in the top of the seventh, however.
Courtney Anderson went the distance on the BSU mound and finished with nine strikeouts.
The Beavers will host Wayne State in a doubleheader today starting at 10 a.m.
