Arthur Pershing Raymond, 88, of Grand Forks, N.D., died on Monday, Sept. 4, 2006, at Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks, Minn.

One of his sons is a Bemidji resident.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Mendenhall Presbyterian Church in East Grand Forks. A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Stennes Funeral Home of East Grand Forks with a 7 p.m. Prayer Service. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in East Grand Forks. Military Honors will be by East Grand Forks Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 3817 and American Legion Post No. 157.

He was born on May 16, 1918, to George and Olga (Dahl) Raymond, in Branford, N.D. He grew up and attended school in East Grand Forks, Minn. He joined the United States Army on April 2, 1945, and was a Corporal stationed in Fort Sheridan Illinois. Following his discharge from the army on April 26, 1946, he worked at the Standard Service Station in East Grand Forks. On May 22, 1938, he married Ellen Elizabeth Whiteaker in Crookston, Minn. He and his brother-in-law established Economy Tire Store where he played a key role in the growth and development of what became Home of Economy. Over the 64 years, he was active in the management and daily operation of the store.

He was a life member of the American Legion Post 157 of East Grand Forks, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817, Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 350, Elks Club and the Disabled American Veterans No. 2. He was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons, Mendenhall Presbyterian Church, Kem Temple, Scottish Rite of the Red River Lodge No. 292 of East Grand Forks, Minnesota, and also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of East Grand Forks.

He is survived by his sons, Richard (Carlyne) Raymond of St. James, Minn., Robert (Pam) Raymond of Alexandra, Minn., Gary (Denise) Raymond of Walker, Mark (Sandy) Raymond of Fairfield, Calif., and Todd (Barbara) Raymond of Bemidji; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; sisters, Jean Kiesau of Grand Forks and Margaret (Snooks) Sullivan of East Grand Forks; and special friend, Phyllis Norgard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, George, Gerald, Earle, Dwayne and Calvin Raymond; and sister, Margretta Hambrecht.
