Area students advance to Regional Spelling Bee

The Region 1 and 2 Spelling Bee was held Feb. 26 at Northland Community and Technical College in Thief River Falls.

Forty-three students in grades 5-8 from 33 schools in northwest Minnesota were eligible to participate in the Regional Spelling Bee hosted by Northwest Service Cooperative.

All spellers participated in a written round in the morning with the top 24 spellers continuing in the afternoon with an oral round.

The top four spellers of the Regional Spelling Bee will advance to the Multi-Regional-State Spelling Bee March 9 in Fergus Falls with the winner of this Bee to advance to the 83rd annual National Spelling Bee in Washington D.C. from June 2-4.

Students competing in the Regional Spelling Bee are Henry Curtis, Donna Huang, Brad Kovacovich, Lashai Smith and Hunter Evans, all of Bemidji Area Schools; Morgan Levy of Blackduck; Ashley Groshong of Clearbrook-Gonvick; Shannon Head of Kelliher; Savanna Day of Laporte; McKaylee Swanson of Mahnomen; Dustin McGee of Nevis; Monica Prentice of Red Lake; and Sara Schomburg of Trek North Junior and Senior High School in Bemidji.
