Area roundup: Davis, Carlson advance to state cross country meet

Wesley Davis and Marissa Carlson will represent Bagley-Fosston at Saturday's state Class A cross country meet at St. Olaf.

Davis, a junior, took sixth place at Friday's Section 8A meet at Twin Pines Golf Course in Bagley. Carlson finished eighth in the girls race.

The top 10 individuals in each race qualified for the state meet. Carlson will race at 1 p.m. Saturday while Davies will begin his competition at 2 p.m.

Other Bagley-Fosston results saw Chris Non finish 46th (19:16.50), Wyatt Nordskog 61st (19:43.55), Alex Zuschke 63rd (19:47.93), Roman Bode 68th (20:00.84), K.J. Kubiak 70th (20:11.77) and Jared Brinkman 82nd (20:40.18).

Bagley-Fosston placed eighth in the team standings with 234 points and Trek North 12th with 322.

Individually Trek North was paced by Andy Gustafson who finished 38th (18:53.51). Also competing for Trek North were Will Hawkins who was 69th (20:05.40), Elijah Lash who was 72nd (20:16.44), Sebastian Holman who was 80th (20:34.36), Gabriel Lash who was 81st (20:38.76) and Steven Buening who was 111th (23:19.92).

Carlson claimed her trip to Saturday's state meet by finishing eighth in the girls race with a time of 16:19.42. The freshman earned her trip to state with seven seconds to spare as Susy Heppner of Warroad placed 10th in 16:26.77.

Bagley-Fosston ran with an incomplete team as Carlson was joined by Shannon Balstad who was 89th (21:05.23) and Megan Flaherty who was 94th (21:25.55).

Trek North placed 10th among the 13 complete teams with 255 points.

Sarah Hamrin paced Trek North as the eighth grader was 30th (17:34.29). Madeline Treuer was 45th (18:12.78), Hannah Lash 61st (18:53.05), Kaija Roy 70th (19:25.03) and Rebecca Eckdahl 88th (20:56.79).

The Section 8A volleyball playoffs have reached the quarterfinal stage and the East Sub-Section will continue its portion of the tournament Tuesday and Friday at Bemidji State University.

Tuesday's action begins at 6 p.m. with top-seeded Lake of the Woods battling No. 5 Clearbrook-Gonvick. At 7:30 p.m. third-ranked Walker-Hackensack-Akeley will square off with No. 2 Fosston.

In Tuesday's West Sub-Section playoffs at NCTC Win-E-Mac will meet Stephen-Argyle and Kittson Central will tangle with Northern Freeze.

On Friday the West Sub-Section finalists will clash at BSU at 6 p.m. and that match will be followed by the East Sub-Section final.

The sub-section survivors will face each other 7 p.m. Saturday at UM-Crookston for the Section 8A crown.

The area teams have all been eliminated from the post-season football playoff picture.

In Saturday's Section 8A action Warren-Alvarado-Oslo ousted Cass Lake-Bena 4-0 while Fertile-Beltrami blanked Northern Freeze 36-0.

WAO and Northern Freeze meet 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks for the Section 8A crown.

Bagley saw its hopes of winning the Section 8-2A title dashed Saturday when the fourth-seeded Flyers lost 43-6 to No. 1 Hawley. Warroad, the third seed, upset No. 2 Barnesville 21-20 in the other semifinal.

Hawley and Warroad will meet 8 pm. Friday at the Fargodome for the title.

In Section 7 Nine-Man play, Bigfork eliminated Kelliher-Northome 47-20 in Saturday's semifinal. Bigfork will face Northwoods, which belted Mountain Iron-Buhl 46-18 Saturday, in Friday's championship game.
