AREA ROUNDUP: BCLB, Fosston-Bagley wrestlers begin section playoffs

BLACKDUCK – The section 8A and 8-2A wrestling tournaments begin Saturday at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Thief River Falls.

In Section 8A Blackduck-Cass Lake-Bena earned the fourth seed and will square off against No. 5 Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton at 2 p.m. That winner will return to the mat at 4 p.m., most likely against top-seeded Frazee.

The Bears will take an 11-9 record into its opener. BCLB and Dilworth-GF have not met this winter but both teams participated in the Big Bear meet in mid-December. The Bears scored 78 points in that competition while Dilworth-GF scored 30.

In Section 8-2A Fosston-Bagley (6-9) was seeded eighth and will begin its tournament at 11 a.m. against No. 9 Roseau. The teams squared off Jan. 22 and Roseau defeated the Greyhounds 40-24.

Saturday’s winner will advance to the quarterfinals and a match against No. 1 seed Perham.

Boys basketball

Cass Lake-Bena continued its late-season surge with wins in its last three games. After falling 83-67 at Nevis on Feb. 5 the Panthers have stopped Clearbrook-Gonvick 89-50, Laporte 79-46 and Red Lake County Central 71-69.

Against Clearbrook-Gonvick the Panthers (8-10) employed a press at the start and the tactic produced numerous C-G turnovers which gave the Panthers the early lead.

Josh LaDuke finished with 22 points while Damien Kingbird had 19 points and 12 rebounds. Alvin Wind added 13 points and Ken Cloud 11 rebounds.

In the victory over Laporte CL-B forged a 39-28 lead at the break and held Laporte to only 18 points in the second half.

Gage Headbird and LaDuke tallied 17 points and Damien Kingbird scored 15.

Laporte slid to 3-13 this week after losing 93-37 to Red Lake and being defeated by CL-B.

Bagley (6-15) split two games, downing Lake Park-Audubon 70-47 but losing 47-45 to Ulen-Hitterdal.

Kelliher-Northome (12-6) went 2-2 last week. After losing 80-57 to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley and 89-56 to Red Lake the Mustangs defeated Pine River 63-50 and Bigfork 73-68.

Clearbrook-Gonvick dipped to 2-16 after losing to Cass Lake-Bena and 75-71 in double overtime to Sacred Heart.

Red Lake upped its record to 13-9 with its wins over Laporte and Kelliher-Northome.

Blackduck (13-7) posted a pair of wins over the past week, thumping Pine River 72-53 and belting Lake of the Woods 74-39.

Girls basketball

The area teams are entering the final stages of their regular seasons.

Red Lake will take a 13-5 record into its finale against Blackduck on Feb. 21. In recent action the Warriors defeated Laporte (1-15) 89-16 and Kelliher-Northome 87-73.

K-N (11-9) opened the past week with a 57-48 victory over WHA but then lost 64-46 to Clearbrook-Gonvick, 84-48 to Pine River and to Red Lake.

Bagley (13-9) went 3-0 last week, tripping Park Rapids 70-54, Lake Park-Audubon 62-48 and Ulen-Hitterdal 60-53.

Cass Lake-Bena (4-17) dropped a pair of games, losing 66-35 to Nevis and 83-50 to Clearbrook-Gonvick.

C-G (19-2) also defeated Kelliher-Northome and posted a 44-42 win at Nevis.

Blackduck (5-15) split a pair of games, edging Deer River 58-52 but losing 98-35 to Pine River.

Hockey

Bagley-Fosston ended its season 7-16-1 and will enter the postseason on a five-game losing streak. In last week’s action the Flyers fell 7-1 to Detroit Lakes, 6-5 in overtime to Park Rapids, 9-2 to Morris and 8-4 to Achiever Academy.

Bagley-Fosston is likely to be the ninth seed in Section 8A. The Flyers have a 29.0 QRF rating and lead only Red Lake Falls which is 26.3.

East Grand Forks is the probable top seed as the Green Wave is 19-2-3 and has a QRF of 102.3.
