Area high school roundup: Fisher reaches 100 hits

CASS LAKE - After starting the season 0-2 the Cass Lake-Bena baseball team appears to have regained its footing.

Last week the Panthers ran their winning streak to four games and upped their overall record to 4-2 with a pair of victories. The week began with a 7-5 victory over Kelliher-Northome and also included a 14-4 triumph at Nevis.

Caleb Fisher became the third CL-B player to reach the 100-hit barrier with a fourth-inning single in the win over K-N. The Panthers managed only four hits in the win but profited from six walks and three Mustangs errors.

Fisher also was the winning pitcher.

Christian Jourdain had a pair of hits for K-N and Joe Schuh scored twice.

Cass Lake-Bena held a 2-1 lead over Nevis after four innings but the Panthers put the game on ice with nine runs in the fifth.

The explosion was fueled by Fisher's double, Ben Ruzek's two singles and singles by Nic Rairdon, Danny Fredrickson, Daven Staples and Ryan Erickson.

Fisher scored three runs while Jake Ellis scored twice.

Wesley Moe earned the pitching victory.

CL-B was scheduled to host Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Tuesday. The Panthers will also entertain Blackduck Thursday and visit Pine River on Friday.

Bagley went 2-3 during the past week. The stretch began with a 16-1 victory over Red Lake and a 4-3 loss to Pine River. The Flyers then split with Lake of the Woods, losing 5-4 but winning 9-4. The week ended with a 7-4 setback to Thief River Falls.

Bagley, 7-4, hosted K-N Tuesday and welcomes Laporte on Thursday and Mahnomen on Friday.

K-N begins the week with a 3-4 record after losing 12-1 to Blackduck and 7-5 to CL-B and defeating Red Lake 7-6.

In addition to Tuesday's game at Bagley the Mustangs host WHA on Thursday.

Blackduck continued its success last week, going 4-1 and improving to 8-2 overall. After falling 3-2 to Fosston the Drakes thumped K-N 12-1, swept Nevis 13-2 and 11-4, and edged Pine River 5-4.

The Flyers were scheduled to visit Lake of the Woods Tuesday and then will head to CL-B on Thursday and Red Lake on Friday.

Laporte is still seeking its initial victory. The Wildcats are 0-5 after losing 11-0 to Nevis and 10-0 to Pine River. Thursday they visit Bagley and Friday they host WHA.

Red Lake also is 0-5 and hopes to notch its first win Thursday against Pine River or Friday against Blackduck. Both games are scheduled for Red Lake.

Softball

Hope Lindner had four hits and two RBI for K-N but the effort wasn't enough as the Mustangs dropped a doubleheader to Littlefork, losing 10-0 and 25-3.

The Mustangs (1-5) also lost 20-19 to Blackduck after forging a 14-0 lead in the third inning.

Tiffany Stillday had two hits and three RBI and Taylor Grams ripped four hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three teammates.

Cass Lake-Bena was 0-2 last week, falling 9-1 to Pine River and 16-5 to WHA. Red Lake also dropped a pair of games, 9-5 to Laporte and 19-0 to WHA.

Blackduck enters this week 2-3 after downing Indus 20-2 and nipping K-N 20-19.

Laporte dipped to 1-2 after defeating Red Lake 9-5 and losing 28-1 to Nevis.

Bagley begins the week 8-3 following a 9-7 victory over Fertile-Beltrami and a 19-0 loss to Thief River Falls.
