Area boys track: Northome-Kelliher-Blackduck is young but experienced

NORTHOME — The Northome-Kelliher-Blackduck boys track team has 26 athletes this year and none of them are seniors.

The young Bulldogs will look to their 10 athletes who will return to the varsity roster and have also added strength with the arrival of newcomers, according to coach Jim Schneider. Schneider said that junior captain Cody Rankin is responsible for bringing in some of those newcomers.

“He did a lot of recruiting and added several new athletes to the team,” Schneider said.

Joining Rankin as captain will be junior Paul Eckstrom.

Rankin competes in the 400, the 4x800, the 4x400 and long jump. Eckstrom participates in the long jump.

Despite losing most of their sprinters to graduation, the Bulldogs should be strong in the mid to long distance, Schneider said. Also returning are two hurdlers who made it to the section meet last year and most of last year’s throwers.

Schneider would like to see all of the athletes improve their times, jumps and throws.

He is hoping that multiple athletes will qualify for the section meet and some for the state track meet.

The boys varsity roster includes juniors Rankin, Eckstrom, Eli Rahier, Brett Gross and Adrian Pink, sophomores Cal Roosdett, Giizhik Wagner, Joseph Pfeifer, Logan Adams, Matthew Jourdan, Raphael Piovezan and Tyler Rosebear, freshmen Morton Eckstrom, Michael Chaffin and Larry Favala, eighth graders Cameron Eckstrom, Clyde Jensen and Dennis King plus seventh graders Adnew Stueven, Alex Fahey, Dixon Patch, Dominic Hard, Joshua Hadna, Mark Hotvedt, Nolan Juelson and Peter Schneider.

The Bulldogs competed in the Little Amik meet on April 1, placing eighth, and also competed in the Aurora Borealis meet on Tuesday. Both meets were held indoors at Bemidji State University.

A meet was scheduled for Thursday at Deer River High School and another is planned for the same location on April 15. The Bulldogs will have a home meet at Northome Secondary School on April 29.

The Flyers continued to prepare for the outdoor season by participating in all four indoor meets at the BSU Gillett Recreation Center.

Last week the facility hosted the Little Amik and Bagley-Fosston finished sixth in the 12-team field. Individually the Flyers were led by Tyler Jackson who won the 200 with a time of 24.07. Logan Jackson tied for second in the 60 dash (7.51) and Louis Larson was third in the triple jump (37-7).

Cole Nelson was fifth in the high jump (5-8) and 12th in the mile (5:21.96) while Alexi Bode was seventh in the 60 hurdles (10.56).

Bagley-Fosston also was third in the 4x200 (1:42.03) and fourth in the 4x400 (3:57.87).

During the Paul Bunyan Classic earlier this spring at BSU, Larson sailed 38-11.5 in the triple jump and that performance caught the eye of coach Sean Peterson.

“That is the best triple jump by a Bagley-Fosston boy in years and Louis is poised to go over the 40-foot mark in the coming weeks,” Peterson said.

Walker Cage also had a good day at the Paul Bunyan Classic, scoring in three different events.

“Walker continues to be the team’s top point scorer,” Peterson said.

The squad returns 12 lettermen including seniors Landon Peterson, Logan Thorson, Alexi Bode and Tyler Jackson. Senior Matt Ludwig also is out this spring.

The junior cast includes returning letterwinners Nelson and Reid Olson plus Logan LaRue, Jay Burns and Regan Johnson.

Sophomores who return include lettermen Max Beckstrand, Cage and Larson plus Zachary Fultz and Braden Sjoblom.

The list of returning letterwinners also includes freshman Jack Nelson and eighth grader Hunter Stai.

Other freshmen on this year’s squad are Gunnar DuPaul, Jacob Siefort, Josh Olson and Coleby Wells.

Completing the roster are nine eighth graders and 11 seventh graders.

Trek North has a pair of seniors on the roster, Connor Watts and Sebastian Holeman who placed 20th in the mile (5:46.79) during the Little Amik. Andrew Matson, who was 22nd in the 400 at last week’s Little Amik meet with a time of 1:02.73, is a freshman as are Bryson Redgrave, Caleb Redgrave, Joe Jackson, Tristan Larson and William Hawkins.

The eighth graders on the roster include Lupe Rosillo and Zhaabi Bush while the team also includes seventh graders Garrisen Fredrickson, Nick Redgrave, Zach Fouguerel-Skoe and Zane Esparza.

Cass Lake-Bena

Kyote Windom, Jesse Kjensmo and Erik Jones are the seniors for the Panthers. Last week Windom finished 28th in the mile (6:54.85) at the Little Amik meet.

John Weyaus is the lone junior and John Fairbanks is the only sophomore. Representing the freshman class are Chas Wickner, Tanner LaDuke, Tristan Willson and Zach Foster.
