Anton "Sonny Man" Mountain, 80, whose Ojibwe name is Niizhoo Gaabaw, which means Two Stand, of Bemidji, died Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Veteran's Memorial Building in Cass Lake with the Rev. Harold Eaglebull, Rev. John Rock and Lay-Pastor Ben Morris officiating. A wake will begin at noon Sunday at the Veteran's Memorial Building and continue until the time of the service.
Cease Family Funeral Home of Cass Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
The pallbearers will be Loren French, Tony Mountain, Kevin Mountain, Orville Johnson, Dave Mountain and Jordan Troy.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lisa "Goofy" Johnson, Ralph "Bucky" Goodman, Floyd Johnson, Michael Troy, Floyd Johnson Jr., Jage Hunt and "Ole" Fairbanks.
He was born on April 24, 1928, to John Mountain and Eva Hurd in Onigum, Minn. He was raised and educated in Red Lake. He began logging and working as a sawyer in a saw mill. He worked in the logging industry for more than 20 years. He married Florence LaRose on April 10, 1978, in Walker. She died on Feb. 8, 2006. He enjoyed playing poker, especially with his good friend "Ole" Fairbanks. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his sons, Loren French of Cass Lake, Tony Mountain of Hackensack, Dave Mountain of Red Lake, Kevin Mountain of Ohio; daughters, Diane Mountain of Redwood Falls, Minn., Valerie Jensen of Bemidji, Antonette (Michael) Troy of Bemidji; brothers, Herb Mountain, Floyd Johnson, Orville Johnson, Kenny Johnson, Ronald Johnson; sister, Diane Blakely; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Arlen Mountain; daughter, Arlette Mountain; brother, David Mountain and sister, Shirley Johnson.
