BEMIDJI — Area American Indian communities will benefit from federal grants aimed at providing affordable housing.

The funds were provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Indian Housing Block Grant Program and can be used for a variety of housing activities, including building affordable housing or providing assistance to existing housing developed under the Indian Housing Program, according to a HUD press release.

Grant recipients include:

Leech Lake Housing Authority in Cass Lake, $3.8 million

Red Lake reservation Housing Authority in Red Lake, $3.6 million

White Earth Reservation Housing Authority in Waubun, $2.2 million

HUD recently awarded $563 million to 353 American Indian and Alaskan Native entities. Minnesota received more than $13 million.
