Amateur baseball: Blue Ox win two of three games at Nimrod tourney
NIMROD -- The Bemidji Blue Ox finished in third place at last weekend's tournament in Nimrod.
The Blue Ox opened with a 13-0 pasting of Greenwald and, after losing 3-1 to the host team, Bemidji outlasted Fort Ripley 10-8 for third place.
Nimrod won the tournament with a 4-2 victory over Champlin in the title game.
In Bemidji's win over Greenwald, Ryan Sander and Gabe Salander combined for the five-inning shutout. Sander earned the pitching win with three stellar innings and Salander finished.
Bemidji's offense ripped 19 hits, including three by Mitch Hendricks and Sander. Simon Anderson, Conner McNallan, Collin Rutledge and Cody Jenkins each contributed a pair.
Ryan Brezinski went the distance on the Blue Ox mound in the seven-inning loss to Nimrod. Hendricks had an RBI single while Cody Rutledge, McNallan, Nick Hovila and Cody Stevens also had hits.
Fort Ripley began the tournament ranked No. 10 in the state's Class C poll but the Blue Ox handed Fort Ripley its second straight loss in the tournament.
Hendricks pitched all seven innings and McNallan delivered a clutch double among his two hits. Hovila, Matt Baier and Cody Rutledge also had two hits.
The Blue Ox resume their home schedule 7:30 p.m. today when they entertain Cass Lake.
