AMATEUR BASEBALL: Blue Ox fall to Jordan in state opener
BELLE PLAINE — Bemidji fell behind early in its Minnesota Amateur Baseball Class C state tournament opener and never recovered.
After a pair of 1-2-3 innings from both teams, a big second inning powered the Brewers.
Blue Ox pitcher Ryan Sander suffered an injury and had to be removed from the game after just 1 2/3 innings, but not before giving up five Jordan runs on five hits and two walks.
Relief pitcher Logan Hulst came in to replace Sander and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings — at least, until the seventh, when Jordan tacked on three more. The Brewers added two more in the top of the seventh to make it 10-0.
The Blue Ox struggled to score until late in the game, when Sam Dwyer led off the inning reaching on an error and came home to score on a single, a walk and ultimately a fielders’ choice by Connor McNallan.
That, however, proved to be Bemidji’s only run in the game.
The Blue Ox, who finish the season 20-5, had seven hits total — including two each from Sander (who remained in the game at third base and first base) and Ryan Stevens, who both singled.
Nick Hovila had the Blue Ox’s lone extra-base hit, doubled in the first inning.
Mitch Bockenstendt started and got the win for Jordan, going seven innings and giving up just five hits. Adrian Turner give up the only run for Jordan in the eighth.
