Alvina Katherine Sayers, 53

Alvina Katherine Sayers, 53, of Red Lake, died Sunday, Dec. 28, 2008, at the Red Lake Hospital in Red Lake.

Traditional funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Little Rock Community Center in Red Lake. A wake will begin at noon today, at the Little Rock Community Center and will continue until the time of the services. Burial will be in the St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake.

The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji assisted the family with arrangements.

The pallbearers will be Clyde Bellecourt, Joe Serious, Daryl Barrett, Justin Lussier, Loren Barrett, Randy Lussier, Rain Stately, Travis Varney Sr., Leroy Varney, Golden Eagle Stately, Lee Sayers Jr., Keith Lussier Sr. and Tyrone Barrett.

Honorary pallbearers will be Edwina Fajardo, Lori Ellis Bev Neadeau, Robyn Isham Stately, Elice (Varney) Donnell, Shirley Lussier and Carolyn King.

She was born on Sept. 18, 1955, to Royce and Esther (Fairbanks) Sayers in Red Lake. She was raised and educated in Red Lake. She moved to Minneapolis, Minn., when she was a teenager with her mother's family. As a young woman she was involved in the American Indian Movement (AIM), where she participated in the "Longest Walk," from San Francisco, Calif., to Washington, D.C. She was also an active member at Wounded Knee in 1973. She moved back home to Red Lake in 1993 with her children. She attended technical school in Redby, where she was certified as an electrician. She helped families enrolled in the Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) program. She also worked in the Red Lake Middle School as a teacher's aide. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed going to powwows, visiting casinos, collecting CD's, listening to music and watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings.

She is survived by her sons, Adrian (Charmaine) Sayers of Red Lake and Dale (Michelle) Sayers of St. Paul, Minn.; daughters, Esther (Dean) Sayers of Redwood Falls, Minn., Linda (McKinley) Sayers of Red Lake and Lori Sayers of Red Lake; a grandson, whom she raised, Gordon Sayers of Red Lake; brothers, Adrian (Darlene) Lussier of Red Lake, Randy Sayers and JR Sayers; sister, Ramona Whitefeather of Redby, Minn.; eight grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lester Van Wert; son, Quinton Sayers; brothers, John Lussier, Gordon Lussier, Leland Sayers and LeRoy Whitefeather; sisters, Noreen Varney, twin sister, Alvera Sayers and Marlene Barrett.
