Althoff's basket lifts Bemidji State women to 78-76 victory
The Bemidji State University women's basketball team earned a 78-76 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory against Upper Iowa in Fayette, Iowa Sunday on a last second put-back from freshman Jessie Althoff (C, Becker, Minn.). The win gives the Beavers a weekend sweep of the conference road trip. BSU was led by junior Anna Hebrink (G, Austin, Minn.), who posted 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the game.
"Everything was a grind for both teams," said head coach Mike Curfman. "We had a good team effort. It's good to see different players stepping up every game."
The Beavers (6-3, 2-2 NSIC) went into the locker room ahead by seven at 35-28. BSU had a lead as large as 10 in the first half, controlling most of the first frame. The first 3:15 of the second half saw the Peacocks chipping-away at the Beaver lead and finally gaining an advantage at the 16:03 mark, their first lead since halfway through the first half. UIU held a lead as large as five over the following four minutes before BSU got back on top. The Beaver lead didn't last long and UIU regained the lead with 10:07 on the clock. The home team pushed the lead to five with just over six minutes remaining, forcing BSU to play catch-up for the rest of the game. The Beavers tied the game four times, but wouldn't hold a lead until the final second. A junior Colleen McKay (C, Barnum, Minn.) jumper with 1:23 left tied the contest 76-76. The Peacocks had two opportunities and BSU had one to try and earn the late advantage, but couldn't find the bottom of the net. The Beavers had the last shot, starting its final possession with 24 ticks left. Freshman Katie Pettit (G, Howard Lake, Minn.) drove to the hoop and put-up a lay-up with two seconds remaining, but it didn't go down. Luckily for BSU, Althoff was there to grab the Beavers' 11th offensive rebound of the game and put the rebound in for the go-ahead bucket. The Peacocks' inbound pass was stolen by Hebrink and BSU was victorious.
McKay came off the bench to pour-in a season-high 15 points. Althoff had 12 points and six rebounds, four off which came on the offensive glass. The Beavers overcame 43.5 shooting from UIU, while only shooting 38.2 percent from the field in the game.
