Alice Racer

Aug. 30, 1934-July 20, 2008

Alice W. Racer, 73, of Osage, passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2008 at the Hennepin County Medical Center Burn Unit in Minneapolis, with her loved ones at her side.

Alice was born to Gust and Minnie (Walholt) Lindbom on Aug. 30, 1934, at her parent's farm in Shell Lake Township, Becker County. She attended the District 82 Country School near her home. As a young woman, Alice ventured to Chicago, Ill., where she did production work at the Bethlehem Tool and Die Company.

On June 30, 1957, Alice married John Edward Racer at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Snellman. This union was blessed with two children, Kevin and Robin. After spending their first two years of marriage in Chicago, the young couple returned to the family farm in Shell Lake Township, which they had purchased, and engaged in dairy farming.

While John was gone working in road and bridge construction throughout the region, Alice would milk and care for their dairy herd and put up the necessary crops to feed the herd. In addition, Alice dedicated herself to making a warm and loving home for her husband and children. She was a wonderful cook and baker who will be long remembered for her delicious chicken and dumpling dinners and her homemade pies and cakes.

After John started his own construction company, they sold the dairy herd so that they could focus their energies together on the demands of running their own business. Alice managed the office and did all the book work, completed the weekly payrolls, paid all the bills, scheduled upcoming jobs and assisted John in many other aspects of their business for the 35 years they successfully operated the company.

Alice enjoyed the outdoors, and each spring would look forward to planting a large vegetable garden, which she would nurture into fruitful abundance to share with family and friends. She also enjoyed raising beautiful flowers into colorful splendor for all to see and appreciate.

Alice had a profound love for animals, and especially loved her two puppies, Gizmo and Sport, who will miss her terribly. She was a longtime member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Snellman. Above all, Alice dedicated her entire life to her husband, children and her three beloved grandchildren, whom she loved with all her heart.

Alice will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband of 51 years, John Racer, her son, Kevin (Shellie) Racer; and daughter, Robin (Jamie) Dotseth, all of Osage; her three beloved grandchildren; two sisters, Elnora Mattson and Annie Nieminen, both of Osage; two brothers, Ralph (Senia) Lindbom and Harold (Mary) Lindbom, both of Osage; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Preceding Alice in death were her parents and two sisters, Signe Ennis and Gladys Dormanen.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 25, at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids, and continuing one hour prior to the start of services on Saturday at the church.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26, at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Snellman, with the Rev. Bill Neumann officiating.

The casket bearers will be Jody Yliniemi, Joshua Yliniemi, Robert Ennis, Michael Gibson, Shawn Jensen and Dean Drewes. The honorary casket bearers will be: Harold Lindbom, Edward Ennis, Chester Dormanen, Nicholas Gibson, Samantha Gibson and Tabitha Racer.
