BEMIDJI – The Bemidji Police Department plans to conduct alcohol compliance checks beginning in mid-March.

The checks are used to assure local liquor establishments aren’t furnishing alcohol to underage buyers.

The checks will continue into April, or until a time that compliances are consistently noted, according to a news release issued by the Police Department.

Employees and employers may be subject to criminal and civil penalties for alcohol sales made to underage persons.

In its news release, the Police Department said it encourages licensed liquor retailers to educate their employees on proper procedures in checking customers’ identification and refusing sale to underage buyers.
