Skalka was a front-seat passenger in a sport utility vehicle that skidded out of control on Interstate 29 south of Fargo and went into the ditch when a rear tire blew shortly after 11 p.m. just north of the Oxbow exit, the North Dakota Highway Patrol said.

The SUV rolled and came to rest on its roof. Skalka was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

The driver, 68-year-old Stuart Johnson, and his wife, 62-year-old Judy Johnson, were not injured. The Johnsons also live in Akeley. Skalka was Judy Johnson's mother.

The three individuals were traveling from Nebraska to their home in Akeley when the crash occurred.

The crash remains under investigation.
