Adult Nastar Skiing League to open on Jan. 5

It's time to dust off the old downhill skis and apply some new wax as three local skiers are reviving an Adult Nastar Skiing League.

Mike Huerbin, Clancy Erickson and Mitch Rautio are organizing a Saturday evening adult league to run from 5 p.m. to about 7 p.m. starting on Jan. 5.

"This will be for adults 18 and up, a team event, two people or more per team," said Huerbin. "It will no longer be a one-on-one event, we will calculate the average times. Another change will be it won't be a season-long event. It will be three weeks long -- short bursts, three different league events, so those who wish to compete can jump in at any time."

A new timing shack was built on top of the Beltrami Bowl ski run. The Bemidji High School construction class helped build the shell with members of the Buena Vista Ski Team building a platform and putting on the siding. The material was donated by Wille Timber of Puposky.

"With the timing shack on top it allows use to interact with the skiers, give instructions if needed and it's easier to control traffic from the top," said Huerbin.

The BV Ski Team will continue to host Nastar events on Saturday and Sundays. The eventual dream is to develop Junior Race Camps to hone young skiers' abilities.

Next season the team hopes to work with satellite ski resorts at Buck Hill and Powder Ridge to share locations for Nastar races and develop one large season-ending race.
