Just when you think the pathetic and childish in our culture is been fully exploited a new surprise awaits. Your Sunday headline, “Wake-up call,” in “Oh my God” block letters, decrying the sorry state of BSU athletics was enough to make me laugh out loud. It was that or cry.
While BSU is shrinking its academic programs and essentially turning itself into a glorified trade school, we are told we should focus on the state of ritual, tribal warfare on the football field and hockey arena. A subject deserving of no less than two-thirds of the front page.
BSU is an enterprise that could be central to keeping Bemidji a healthy community. Evidently producing academic excellence and a depth of curriculum still takes a back seat to the number of non-academic scholarships we can secure and the number of concussions we can produce on the football field. Instead of improving the educational environment at BSU we finessed a $100 million hockey arena (a figure that could have financed a new medical school) and are now being told we should be deeply concerned over attracting, to quote your article, a “higher level of fan.”
Rah, rah, rah.
