According to the patrol, a 1987 Ford Ranger was traveling east on Clearwater County Highway 27 when the driver failed to yield and collided with the trailer of a 2005 International semi that was southbound on state Highway 92 at 3:18 a.m.

The patrol said both occupants of the Ford Ranger -- Nicholas R. Smith, 22, of Bagley, and Brandon A. Nattrass, 20, of Shevlin, Minn. -- were injured and taken by ambulance to the Sanford Bemidji Medical Center.

It is unknown if the men were wearing seat belts or who was driving the pickup. The vehicle was totaled.

Smith and Nattrass were later taken by air ambulance to Sanford Health in Fargo. Their conditions were not immediately available this afternoon.

The semi driver, Jeffri Pearson, 54, of Salol, Minn., was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.
