12-U baseball: Bemidji finishes third at Midwest Regional
GRAND FORKS - Bemidji's 12-U Northern Heat baseball team finished the summer with a 30-10 record and third place in the Midwest Regional tournament.
After opening the regional with a pair of victories the Northern Heat fell 13-0 to Grand Forks on Saturday and saw the season end in Sunday's loser's bracket final with a 7-2 loss to Bismarck.
Grand Forks went on to capture the title, stopping Bismarck 10-4 Sunday afternoon.
"I'm proud of our kids and our third-place finish at the regional," said Bemidji coach Bruce Dahlin. "We ran into a buzz saw Saturday against Grand Forks. We played well against Bismarck but we were facing a very good team."
In its finale Bemidji took a 2-0 lead in the third when Brady Weideman walked and Ryan Pogue, Drew Boen and Matt Fitzgerald all singled.
Bismarck took the lead with three in its half of the frame and added four insurance runs in the fifth.
Jonah Muller, Fitzgerald and Pogue each ripped a pair of singles to lead Bemidji's offense.
"To finish third in the regions is quite an accomplishment," Dahlin said. "These kids went to regions last year as 11 year olds and now they did it as 12 year olds. No group had done that before.
"They had a great year," the coach added.
