10-year-old seriously injured in Itasca County accident
A 10-year-old Grand Rapids boy was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision Monday night on U.S. Highway 2 in Itasca County.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2004 Buick Rendezvous driven by Christine Flannigan, 56, of Grand Rapids, was westbound on Highway 2. She was attempting to take a left turn to Grouse Lane, and was waiting for eastbound traffic to clear the area. A 2005 Corolla Matrix driven by Carmen Griggs, 43, of Grand Rapids, also was traveling west on Highway 2 with two children passengers, a 6-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy. Griggs attempted to avoid Flannigan's vehicle but was unable to because of the icy conditions, the Patrol said.
All occupants were wearing their seat belts, the Patrol said. Flannigan, Griggs and the 6-year-old boy were taken to the hospital in Grand Rapids with non-life-threatening injuries, but the 10-year-old boy was airlifted to St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth with serious injuries.
